View topic - Tips/Tricks/Critiques, please? :3 >UPDATED!!!<

I've got some works in progress going. ;P I'd like tips and ideas not only for the art process but also for clothing/character designs. C:

Works in progress:

WIP 1: I would especially like tips on how to make him look less cartoony, and how to paint a mouth that doesn't look like lipstick. ;D Any tips and tricks are really appreciated. I've completely started over on this one...

WIP 2: I'm wondering if I should leave the lineart out of this equation. :P Also looking for colour/background suggestions.

WIP 3: Trying to give him some kind of form-fitting, organic body armor...and designing it is quite difficult. :c

BTW: All three pieces are of the same guy, Deveraux. c: Oh, and if you want to colour my lineart, just let me know and go ahead--I'd like to see what you guys can do! ^^

And some pricing help wouldn't hurt, either...

Hot DANG that guy is hot!! //ogles first picture
XDD
You're really, REALLY good! This could easily go for high prices, several thousand per piece! Everything, that is (chibi, realism, and anime)
Your newest bit looks good so far. The nose looks slightly funky, but I'm not a good nose-judger lol

Overall? You're excellent.

LOL I'm glad you like Deveraux. I designed him to be hot, I guess, and that was a birthday card for a friend of mine, so...yeah. love: Not gonna lie, though, drawing that felt a little weird.

Thank you very much overall! And my artist ego has been stroked. So now I feel like drawing more. W00t!

When will you start drawing? //drools
I might wanna buy some of your art, depending on my funds XDD

(And if you feel the urge to draw... I'd be more than happy to provide something for you to sketch/draw ;D)

You have very nice line work, but I think your coloring just needs some refinement. It's probably only a matter of patience, because I can see the attention in your last piece.

About the last piece, the bridge of the nose needs to be thinner. Add eyelashes. Look at some reference photos for face. Basic shape of the face also looks a bit unsure. It's little things like how the area right about the eyebrows are lighter because that's where the skeleton underneath protrudes out, and how the temples should be darker because that's where the skeleton sinks in. Also, ears... just look this up also. My professor once got on to me during class critique because I didn't draw the inside of the ear correctly, lol.

The colors for his skin are too same-y same-y to suggest realism. If you look at some masterworks, you will see that they mix in hints of blue/green into the shadows. If you look at your own skin, you will see that this is true also (in part because of your veins and in part because of the light). Also, I would suggest deepening your shadows. It's a personal preference, but I also think his serious expression/choice of background color warrants more dramatic lighting. Also, don't use flat out gray to shade his eyeballs. Theory behind all of this is: an object is never of one single hue, because the light (which always has a certain "temperature" (color)) hitting an object affects its appearance, and light of course never hits an object uniformly.

And that is the end of my blah blah blah. I hope it is helpful. XD Hard to say about the lips until you show a version with an attempt. I usually start out with a light-ish brown for the upper lip and a dusty dark-ish pink for the lower.

I know the nose was messed up--I forgot to mention that wasn't quite an updated piece and I noticed after I uploaded that the nose needed fixing (it was crooked too...probably still is. He's got a bad case of Michael Jackson syndrome at the moment). My colouring is indeed the main point that needs help; I've been trying to add more redder hues and really chisel out the brow/cheekbones as well. Although in the original sketch he was smiling, I do agree that I need to increase the contrast in the lighting, and I do plan on pulling some purples and reds into the shadows in his face. Thank you very much for your input and I'll keep working on it and posting updated versions. c: And I did try at the lips a few times already but I can't seem to find a good tone that doesn't look like red lipstick or barbie lips... XD

I do currently have an art shop open in the exchange forum, but I don't have any slots open...they filled up fast. D': And now that school's started up again, it'll take even longer to get through them all. /falls over dead/
