View topic - Things that make them better than you (Or so they think)

I agree with you on example 1 and example 2. I hate when you look on someone's profile, and it's all like, "I hate Twilight!1!" like it's something that defines them.

I don't agree with examples 3 and 4 at all though.

People who are vegetarian, people who are vegan, people who choose to ride bikes instead of driving cars, people who recycle, etc. are all genuinely helping to save the world in some way and to some extent. That doesn't mean that they should get elitist about it or put other people down. But it is something they should feel proud of and try to educate others on.

And there is nothing wrong with raising awareness. Yes, there are other things that may help more. But how do you know that lady who changed her facebook picture to raise awareness for breast cancer isn't disabled, bedridden, and on a fixed income? How do you know that isn't all she's able to do to help the cause right now? Or how do you know she doesn't do other things as well? If someone turns their facebook picture pink for breast cancer month, how do you know they're not also doing the breast cancer walk/runs, donating money, volunteering at a hospital, etc.? But even if they're not doing that stuff, just changing their picture pink or whatever at least shows that they're aware of the issue and have some compassion for people who are battling breast cancer. There are still a lot of women out there who do not do self breast exams or who don't know how to do self exams. And there are also women who don't visit the doctor, even if they do find a lump, simply because they're too embarrassed to have the doctor look at their breasts. There are also people who might be motivated to donate to a cause after seeing a friend make a post about it. So even though it might not seem like much, just reminding people to check their breasts, or reminding them that a certain cause or nonprofit could use some donations, or letting them know that breasts are ok to talk about and get examined actually can make huge difference sometimes. It's certainly nothing people should be getting high and mighty about. But if they want to do it and if they feel proud for doing it, great. It's certainly not doing any harm. I hate when people try to do something good, even if it seems like a small thing, and other people belittle them for it.

Llewellyn; I don't believe the OP ever stated that all of the people who do those things are the same, but was pointing out the people who do feel "high and mighty" because they chose to do some small thing like that or because they can afford to do something many others can't. Just like the point of mentioning fans or "anti-fans" was not to say that anyone who likes X or dislikes it is an obnoxious jerk--only the people who think they are god's gift for it, as is the point of the entire discussion.
I have certainly encountered my share of lazy "awareness" people who think that making some obscure reference on the internet is helpful and will not bother trying to do anything else, but still feel that they're better people for it than those who weren't in on their little Facebook thing. While it may remind some people in some way, I certainly don't think that's anything to be self-righteous about. Even if they are going out and doing other things, there's still no reason to look down on anyone who doesn't go around sporting pink ribbons.
The same goes for vegans and eco-this-and-thats who treat anyone who doesn't follow their lifestyle as some kind of dirty earth-murdering villain. Sorry, but making a big point of avoiding the hamburgers and hissing at everyone who rides by in an SUV does not make you a superhero. Do all people who fall under those categories act that way? No. Of course not. But are there people who do? Absolutely, and I for one don't believe they're in any place to act like they're so much better than anyone else.

Well, the first post says, "So those are my top five examples of people who are proud of things that don't matter." And I don't agree with that at all. Because some of the things on the list do matter. And it's fine if a person is proud of doing things that matter, even they are small things or seem like small things. Being condescending about it isn't cool, but that's not the same thing as feeling pride. Maybe that's what the OP meant and it was just poor wording?

Lawyers >.> My uncle's one and while I love him to death, I swear to God he looks down his nose at me because I had a child out of wedlock then split from said sperm donor then waited a few months and started dating again plus I wasn't working or in school. Just because he has a nice house, successful and had a kid when he was freaking 40, doesn't mean he's better then me and I've told him so. I was a stupid kid and I've learned from my freaking mistakes though my daughter and boyfriend of 2 years (who has raised my child since she was 6 months old and is almost 3) are definitely not mistakes.

I'm thinking that's the case. Because while those things can matter, it's more about how people go about them that makes the difference.
