Rules

★ Follow Ernya's TOS (Terms of Service)
★ Please be kind to everyone (ie, no insulting if you don't like the a particular artform, or a particular project)
★ Please don't beg others for items
★ If posting a photo or YouTube vid, please use Spoiler tags (thumbnails that link to larger photos are ok - a thumbnail is 200x200 pixels or less.)
★ Effective as of page 99, no relationship drama.
★ Please see the section on Advertising

  • Show Spoiler
  • ★Regarding Relationshp Drama★
The rule was added because there's far too much whining and bitching by those both single and in relationships.
To be honest, the rule is mostly for me. I realized that I only ever really talk about my relationship when I'm not happy about something.
Plus there've been times where I've mentioned that things aren't perfect, and whoever I'm talking to suddenly hates my boyfriend.

This hangout is about crafting and all things related, it's not for you (or me, mostly) to whine.

That said, sharing when things are going well is perfectly fine. But don't go into too much detail xD
i.e. "I just got off the phone with my ____, we had a great chat about cake" is fine
And yes, I realize this is probably hypocritical.

Advertising

☆ Please don't advertise your minishops or hangouts (Don't just come in and post the link and leave) We have an affiliates section for that.
☆ If someone directly asks you for the link, it's fine
☆ If you have an Etsy or Artfire shop, PM me with the link and I'll add it to the post

About Chainmaille
From Wikipedia

Mail (maille, chainmail) is a type of armour consisting of small metal rings linked together in a pattern to form a mesh.

Mail(le) first appeared some time after 300 BC. Its invention is credited to the Celts. It may have been inspired by the much earlier scale armour. (It) spread to North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, India, Tibet, Korea and Japan.

Mail(le) continues to be used in the 21st century as a component of stab-resistant body armour, cut-resistant gloves for butchers and woodworkers, shark-resistant wetsuits for defence against shark bites, and a number of other applications (like historical re-enactment!)

Maille has many decorative uses as well!

Mail has applications in sculpture and jewellery, especially when made out of precious metals or colourful anodized metals. Mail artwork includes headdresses, Christmas ornaments, chess sets, and jewellery. For these non-traditional applications, hundreds of weaves or patterns have been invented.

Public forums have been created where mail practitioners can show and discuss techniques and weaves and display their creations. M.A.I.L. and the Ring Lord community forum are two of the most popular.

- chainmail/chainmaille/chain mail/chain maille/ring mail/ring maille - for our purposes, they all mean the same thing:

- M.A.I.L.: Maille Artisans International League

- weave: "The term 'weave' refers to how the rings are put together to form a pattern, simply put" (from TRL Forum)

- AR: Aspect Ratio - "the ratio of the inner diameter of a ring to the diameter of the wire it is made of" (from M.A.I.L. article: Aspect Ratio)

- ID: Inner Diameter - Commonly used to describe ring sizes. Can be used alongside the Wire Diameter to find the Aspect Ratio of a ring.

How she got into Chainmaille

I took a jewellery class in grade 11 & 12. In my senior year, I sat with a guy who was also taking a metal art course. The same teacher happened to teach both classes, so he was allowed to work on projects in either class.

He'd decided he wanted to make a chainmaille vest. He wound his own coils, cut his own rings, and wove them together. I immediately took an interest, and asked if I could help - I was struggling with my stained glass project anyway.

Over the course of about a month, the two of us ended up weaving 6,000 stainless steel rings into what was essentially a mesh tanktop. From then on, I was hooked. After graduation, I went back to see the teacher to get some information about where to get the supplies. This was almost 4 years ago, and I'm still weaving!
