James Sunderland is the protagonist of the survival horror game Silent Hill 2. James is a store clerk whose wife, Mary, died three years ago from a terminal disease. When he somehow gets a letter from her, telling him to meet her in their "special place", he travels to the town of Silent Hill, where they once vacationed together, to find her. There he encounters monsters, a little girl named Laura, and a woman who startlingly resembles Mary, named Maria, who eventually accompanies him on his journey. During James' search for his wife and for the answers to the questions that his memory begins to ask, he discovers the truth that would have been better kept unknown to him and, depending on the choices the player makes, he can either leave with and adopt Laura, begin dating Maria, or commit suicide (not counting the "secret" endings.
So... no pressure, huh?
James is a quiet, passive man. He is by nature slightly timid and seems perpetually unsure of himself. However, he is diligent and will not give up on his quest to find his wife. James is actually a bit of a doormat and tends to let others order him around, and he seems to have little regard to his own life and safety (he does things like jumping down holes whose depth he does not know and sticking his hands in suspicious-looking holes and toilets).
