View topic - One nation "Under god"

As an atheist, I feel affronted that the pledge of my country includes a reference to god. Sure, there are "bigger battles" to be fought, but it is small things like this that need to change before bigger changes can occur. Think about how easily manipulated a small child is. If he or she is taught from a young age to say "under god", to believe that a god exists, is that not government pushing religion on its people? "Under god" was inserted into the pledge in the '50's to rally the people together during things like the Red Scare and the Cold War; we now live in a more progressive time, and things should thus be more progressive. As long as the major symbols of our country include a god (In God We Trust, Under God, hanging the ten commandments in courthouses), nonreligious folks like me will continue to be demonized. If our own government can't be secular and tolerant, how can our people be?

✫In our pledge of alligance i just realized they said this. Why are they keeping this in our pledge why they said they don't want to put one religion over all others. And why do some teachers make us stand and sing this song in school. Are we not allowed to sit if we want to. ?

Yes, you are allowed to sit in school during the pledge. If they say anything about it or tell you differently refuse. Your religious beliefs are your own, no one can force you to pledge to something you may or may not believe in. If they send you to the Office explain the situation "calmly" to your Principle they should understand.

The reason I know they will understand is because they can be legally sued for forcing you to pledge to a religion that you have specifically said you do not worship.

Best wishes !

The under god was in our pledge of allegiance since it was created, but then a bunch of people who did not believe in god decided that it was harming their kids to hear and having to say the under god part and threatened to sue and pull their kids out of school due to it. The government responded to taking it out. Now I will admit that my mother is Wiccan and that I personally do not believe in Christianity (even though I do believe there is a god) but I think that people went to far in this subject. If they didnt want to say it or hear it they could have either sat down in class or left the room with the teachers permission during the pledge. At least when I was in school before they took it out that was how it was handled. After all, the people who started our government were religious people so why should we desecrate something they worked so hard on by cutting things out. Which is why a lot of people i knew when it happened would continue to say the under god part in class. And they never got in trouble for it either.

Francis Bellamy "1855-1931" was a baptist minister in 1892 the original pledge was written as followed. I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands, One nation, Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. In 1923-24 the national flag conference, under the leadership of the American league and the daughters of the American revolution, changed the pledges words My flag to the flag of the united states of America. In 1954 congress after A campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words Under God to the pledge.

That is a brief history of the pledge so you are wrong that It started as a religious thing. It started during the red scare. Please check you're history.

Got a [ Skelekat ], don't want it? want to donate it? or want to sell it? message or trade me please.
I don't know why it's still there, but my entire life, I only stood out of respect, but would not recite it or place my hand over my heart. It's not that I am anti-religion, but for some odd reason, it just made me a little uncomfortable.

It's funny. I went to a private Lutheran school and we never even said the pledge regardless of it's mention of God or not.

If you feel uncomfortable saying it, or don't want to, don't stand and sing it. If your teacher says anything to you, you tell them, you don't want to sing about a god you don't believe in. They can't tell you that you have to.

We were not founded as a Christian Nation though. Separation of church and state is important and is what we were founded under. And, as I said in an earlier post, "under God" was not in the original pledge. It was added in 1954 by congress.

YES

"under God" wasn't anywhere in the original pledge, and the only reason it was added was during the height of the anti-Commie hysteria to separate "true" Christian Americans from the "godless and immoral" Soviets
as much as i love America (and i do, i really do)
we were not founded as a Christian nation
it's not "cultural"
and it needs to go
