I know in some cultures they skip their unlucky number whenever possible. Even building floors will jump from 12 to 14 sometimes. I bet you can google that or look it up on wikipedia.

Yeah, in most hotels they skip the thirteenth floor. It's based on the assumptions of thirteen being the unlucky number in the Christian religion. Even a lot of high-rise apartment buildings (seems to be more upscale ones, though, for some reason?) They skip the thirteenth floor.

I read something where it was just a "Friday the 13th" stunt.I guess it makes since given the book is about monsters,but i also believe it is just a plot to make people buy both Hardcover and Paperback copies of the books. =]
Wait, is the content of the chapter missing too? Or is it just that the chapters are numbered 11, 12, 14, 15, etc.?
Also: Just did a quick Google search, and apparently it's not just hotels and complexes that do this; some airports don't have a 13th terminal, and in Florence, Italy, they've skipped 13 in the street addresses of homes.

Not that I've read the series, but I wouldn't be surprised. Their main cast is comprised of monsters and superstitions. Avoiding 13 would fit right in and may even make a decent plot twist in that final book.
