View topic - Irrational Phobia

I have this completely irrational fear of zombies. I'm talking the infectious, mindless, ever hungering hoard. Yes I know there are logical factors that make this so highly improbable it's not worth mentioning but they still terrify me. I can't help but constantly wonder 'What would I do if the zombie apocalypse actually happened?' and 'How could I escape it as alive, and unzombified as possible?' along with other things. It's gotten to the point where I spazz out when the streets are deserted at night, I'm constantly keeping a close eye on any person that's alone, trying to see if they're doing the 'corpse' walk, along with other habits.
Here.
I'll sum it up instead of writing a novella.
I WANT TO STOP BEING AFRAID OF SOMETHING THAT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN!
Can anyone offer any suggestions to help?

That is a tricky one. In many cases, you usually suggest someone get over their fears by getting close to the thing they're afraid of in order to overcome it, but in this case that's not really possible... Maybe watch lots and lots of really bad zombie flicks?

At least you know it's an irrational fear. That's the first step, right?

Like Savagery said, therapists often have people get close to the thing that they're afraid of. Maybe you could start by looking at pictures of cheesy or cutesy zombies. Then maybe watch someone do the makeup for a zombie movie so that you can remind yourself that it isn't real (check YouTube or look for the zombie episode of last season's Face Off). See if there are any zombie movies where the zombies are actually good guys. Or look for zombie movies that are funny, even if it's only funny because of how cheesy it is. If you still can't get over it, talk to a therapist about it.

My Etsy Shop
I sell jewelry and original drawings :D

I'm like that too! I always think of what I'd do if a zombie apocalypse were to occur, and I always glare at anyone who's standing alone on the street. I usually look for things that I could bash a zombie's head with, and when I realize that I'm surrounded by such weapons, I feel calmer.this might seem a bit on the strange side.. But it works or me and it might work for you too.

Well, all phobias are irrational if you don't mind me saying. I would know, I had to study them at college. The mere definition of phobia says that "dispite the person knowing their fear is irrational, they still can't help but to be afraid". And trust me, your not alone. Maybe not everyone is afraid of zombies, but billions of people have a phobia of some sort. Getting rid of them though, requires professional help.

Yeah <_< The one thing you have to remember that the will to live + adrenaline can do amazing things for a person's fight or flight reflexes. Before my fiance moved in from another state I had started to develop the same highly irrational fear. I was be driving home on a sunday around 11am and thought my neighborhood was too quiet. My mind immediately started panning out a zombie scenario and the fear almost made me turn around less than a half block from my own home. Other times I would get out of my car and run up the stairs in a panic to get in the door, all the time watching the bottom of the steps for them to appear.
After he moved in I don't seem to have nearly as much fear. Although he really enjoys watching horror flicks and I don't ^_^;; He makes sure to watch them while I'm at work. I did watch Zombieland (pre-move) and while humorous it made the fear and desperation worse. Later I watched an anime called High School of the Dead (post-move) and by the end of it I strangely felt like I could bash a Zombie or two myself O_o

Some tricks to try to help rationalize things:
QUIT watching every zombie movie that comes out! Hollywood uses all those special effects to trick your eyes and the music to give your brain the queue to incite fear. Irl there wont be terrifying music to warn you but you will probably notice the moaning/shuffle/suspicious people (which you should watch for anyways with all the perverts out there ^_^; )
REMEMBER that the likelihood of zombies being a possibility is slim-none (if you have religious beliefs that can offer comfort in the face of any fear)
FIND your resolve! Having a sturdy will to live is always useful. Be determined that you will not go down without a fight because of _______.

I also find that distracting yourself works too ^_^;; (although that's just avoiding the problem and not facing it at all. . . . which is what I like to do! XD) Anywho, I hope that this is something you can conquer/come to terms with so you can keep on living your life without that unnecessary worry ^_^

Sorry, I'm a little
I think that fear of a zombies is correlated in scare of death, losting control and things like that.
You maybe need to process it in your brains. Or write about it. I was afraid of basilisks (moster snake in Harry Potter) and started scaring toilets because of that when I was kid. So stubid when I think it now.

We just don't want to think the real reasons behind of our scares.
