The thing is, the Canadian medical system rivals the Americans in many ways, and outshines in many others. People here don't get into medicine to get rich, and that's one major step in the direction of quality patient care- nurses become nurses because they care about people, not because of the salary. Granted, we don't have a lot of the innovation that you guys do, and there's still an issue of Canadians wanting more drastic or experimental procedures that have to pack their money and fly south for it, but so many of the arguments against the socialized health care that people were throwing around down there just don't make sense to me. Longer ER waits? Okay, yeah. I spent six hours in there with a kidney infection last year, and I was in pain, and I cried, and it sucked and blah blah blah. But you know what, that visit cost me nothing more than those hours, and the hospital gave me the antibiotics for free because I told them flat out I couldn't afford it. In this economy, I'd rather trade time for medical care than trade less time but a LOT more money for medical care.
