View topic - Ernya Game Guide: BrickWorks

Hello and welcome to the BrickWorks gaming guide. This is the first guide I've ever made, I just wanted to put something together for the BrickWorks game because I like it so much. I've played it tons, although I'm not even close to making the top scorers list, lol. I hope this guide helps new people with the game, if you have any questions or tips, or anything else related to this guide, feel free to PM me. I might eventually add to it for the other games, though I'm not as good at them. (Darn you Align 4! *shakes fist*)

After the game loads, click on "Start" and then click on your paddle to release a ball. Move the paddle with your mouse back and forth to hit the ball and keep it in play. Aim it towards the bricks to hit them and make them disappear. You can also collect effect items. You must click on the paddle to begin each stage. If you lose, you can either click on 'rankings' to get your gold, or on 'reset' to begin again and try to go farther for more gold.

The game consists of a round 'paddle' that you control with your mouse, balls that bounce around the gamescreen and three rows of bricks that continually move down. The object is to keep the ball in play by hitting it with your paddle so it bounces against the bricks and makes them disappear by touching them. They continually move down, and you must make them all disappear before they touch the line at the bottom of the screen. There are also effect items that drop from the bricks. If you collect these, they will give you different effects that will either help you or make things a little more difficult!

Effect Items

heart

These give you an extra ball. The number of balls you have available is shown on your paddle. To activate a ball, simply click on your paddle and the number of balls you have will be put into play. The effect of the hearts is cumulative and they carry over to the next stage - so if you don't activate any of your extra balls, you won't lose them when you move on.

star

These make the balls in play travel faster, and the effect is cumulative, as far as I know, I've never collected more than five stars in a single stage so I don't know if there's a speed cap - but five is enough for me! x_x I think the speed does wear off, but I'm not sure how long it takes. The effects do not carry over into the next stage.

yellow sun

Or I call them yellow suns at least >w> These make your paddle larger, effect is also cumulative and doesn't wear off. How big can your paddle get?

Pretty big.
The effect does not carry over into the next stage.

purple shield/spikey

Or perhaps these are downward-facing arrows, since the effects of these are to shrink your paddle. Effect stacks and your paddle can get preeetty small:

screencap provided by Whitegale, ty!
Does not wear off, and does not carry over into the next stage. I would avoid these, especially if you've been racking up stars.

blue cross

These are my favorite items. Grabbing one of these gives you a 'bouncy bridge' (my lame name for it lol) underneath your paddle, like so:

Balls in play bounce right off it, so you don't lose any you miss. I love these when they show up. |3 The effect lasts about 18-20 seconds. I'm not sure if getting a cross when you already have the bridge up extends the time, I haven't tested that yet...but if you have a bridge up, it doesn't hurt to go ahead and grab one of those crosses if you can.

Bonus Stages

Get the Ernya dragon!
This bonus stage shows up at level 5. The Ernya logo flies across the screen, and you have to hit it with the ball. When you do, it disappears and you get a heart. There is a bridge here, to keep your ball in play, but you cannot activate any extra ones you have.

Avoid the eeevil black balls!
This one shows up on level 10. This one's pretty simple, you have to move your paddle to avoid getting hit by one of the black balls flying across the screen. If one hits you, you lose any extra hearts you've gained.

It seems that the bonus stages repeat every five levels, so level 15 is the Ernya logo stage, and level 20 is the avoid-the-balls stage, and so on.

Other Game Information

Whitegale has observed how the levels work:
As for bonus stages, they seem to happen every five levels, since I got the "Hit the Ernya Dragon" bonus stage on stage 15. This also leads me to believe that the game is a ten stage loop, with the only difference being that the blocks go down faster for each ten-block of stages. (Or it might just be a consistent speed increase per stage, but the jump in speed between stages nine and eleven is sorta noticeable. >.<) I'm sort of guessing this because certain stages have certain stage tendencies, like stage one and eleven both drop only hearts and stars, no yellow suns or purple spikeys or blue crosses. And how two and twelve mostly drop yellow suns and purple spikeys, and very rarely anything else.

I also think that there might be a limit as to how many balls they'll let you have on the screen, and I think it's capped at nine. (I had ten when the third screenie was taken, and I'm wondering where the tenth went, since pretty much all of these were taken almost right after I let them loose. xD)

Thank you Whitegale for the info and the screencaps!

Here's some helpful tips and hints for getting far ahead in the game. Like I said I haven't gotten as far as many others, so if you have any good tips or hints, please let me know and I'll put them right up.

- Pay attention to how you're hitting the balls with your paddle. This version is unique in that the paddle is round, not flat, so you can get some really good sharp angles if you hit the ball from the side instead of the top. Be careful that you don't knock it too low/late or it'll go down instead of up. And if you have a bouncy bridge be careful not to get your ball stuck under your paddle just in time for the bridge to disappear (not that I speak from experience u_u;)

- It's not necessary to play every single extra ball you manage to get. While you do continue to the next level with however many you have plus those in play (say 3 are in the air, but you've collected 4, you'll go to the next level with 7) sometimes it's better to keep fewer in play, so you don't lose any unnecessarily at the earlier, slower levels. When you get past level 11 and the bricks really start to drop, you'll be wanting those extra balls to knock them out as soon as possible.

- A good way to keep hitting multiple balls in play: keep your eyes trained on the line above your paddle, not on the bricks, that'll help you keep track of the balls better.

- Don't forget that the stars keep speeding your balls up when you get them; if you've got more than four in play, this can get pretty frantic. Feel free to skip the star collecting so things don't get too fast.

- And the most basic tip for this game: hit the ball(s) above the bricks early on, so that you can take out as much of the top row as possible. You get a few minutes to enjoy the show while the balls are bouncing back and forth off the ceiling.

I hope this guide helps you! If you have any other tips, or some cool screenshots, (ginormous paddle? A cool shot or hilarious miss?) feel free to send them over and I'll put them up!

Whitegale's enormous PADDLE-O-DOOM. I think that brick is toast.

Very nice guide :)

I'll try and get you a screenie of a tiiny paddle. Might take me a while though XD

Well done! Are you planning on making guides for the other games as well? Let me know because I can help with the pegs and solitaire ones if you want.

Nicely done. ^^

I can probably help on a few screenies. The small one's gonna be pretty hard to get. I'd say if you were to try, stage 7 would be best, as it has the largest amount of purple spikeys that I've seen. >.<

And I'll agree, one's paddle can get pretty dang big. xD

Excellent job so far though. ^^

Edit: Gads, the paddle can get really small. >.<
As shown here.

Thanks for making it!
It's also my favorite game. I think my highest level was level 18 or something. How many levels are there in total?

Thank you for making this guide.
I will try to help since I have only gotten to level 16.
I wonder how far we can go with this game.

Hogwarts is my home.
Aw thanks everyone! I'm glad that people like it. :3

Haha xD Good luck! I tried to do that too but I kept running into the suns xD

Thank you! Well the only other game I can play worth a darn is Pegs, but I can't seem to get past level 6 or 7 xD;; My brain just doesn't work fast enough. But if you would like to, I'll collaborate on a guide for Pegs. I hope I could put it in its own thread so I don't have to make new graphics *laughs*

Oh thank you so much! I really appreciate the screenies and the new information, I'll put that all in right away. I finally got past level 15 the other day and noticed the repeat of the bonus stage so I think you're right. If i have enough time I might note which stage releases what items, until it repeats again...but that'll have to be on a day off xD

x_x Wow it can get small! I think it might even be smaller than the ball, there. Rotfl!

Alright. I'll make a Solitaire one. I like that game a lot and last I checked, I had half the high score board on it too, lol. Did you have ideas on the Pegs guide yet?
Post by Verse » Fri Nov 13, 2009 6:12 pm
Your Solitare guide ruuules, I didn't even know how to play it at all. xD That helped a lot!
And I did my two parts for Pegs. :3

I think getting the cross when you've already got the bridge thing extends the time. I THINK.

The cross does extend the time if you get more than one. I found out this morning. I had the bridge for a good minute and a half or so.. The ball was being stubbourn, but I did keep getting crosses, and the bridge never vanished until I finished the level.

I noticed, but i don't know if it's just me. But for the 10th level with the black balls... the bridge dont dissappear until i have one ball remaining... im gonna see how long i last in that level 3:
