The best way to earn gold here would be by posting. The more you put in a post, the more gold you get. Though you can only get up to 30 gold per post. Though if you're in a squad you can get extra gold for each post made. You also have games but can only earn up to 750 gold a day.
If you have cash at your disposal, the REAL best way to earn gold is selling hearts. But that is only if you want to put real money into the site through donation.

This is good short term.
If you're okay with long term, start collecting items and then exchange them in a few years.

I highly recommend posting. There are many good spots in the hangouts where you can settle in and make friends to chat with. Another good place would be the role play forum if you're into roleplaying. And also the games threads can be good for quick gold. Just remember to read the forum-specific rules as those can vary somewhat from area to area.

Yeah it shouldn't take 3 years to make 4k gold
Each time you post, you can get up to 30 gold per post and if you're in a squad you can get more gold with each post. If your active enough by posting, you can easily make 1k+
But squads are like for each member you get extra gold. You can have three free members (so two can be invited as you would be considered one person) in a squad and earn an extra 3 gold when they are online. You can invite more by purchasing invites and for each person in your squad you can earn +1 gold. And when they post, you get half, so say if you had 6 online squad members, you would get +6 gold with each post you make and +3 gold with each post they make
For the games, it's possible you could of reached the 750 gold limit?
Or did you play one game and only get 5 gold and then you couldn't play again? If so that could be cache issues

well idek about the games, I thought the only way you could get the gold was if you submited your results, and i only got like 6 gold, and it said i couldnt submit results again, and it didn't give me anymore gold the games were really hard and I was playing them for like 15 minutes to get 6 gold

Yeah, you're correct, In order to get gold through games, you have to submit your scores. That sounds like a cache issue. If that happens try clearing your cache and restarting your browser.
