View topic - Anastasia is not a Disney animated feature film.

And I really hope this isn't news to too many people.

I just wanted to clarify this, because it seems to be a source of confusion somehow.

Anastasia marked the debut of Fox Animation Studios. It blatantly imitated the Disney princess style, for obvious reasons. Its production could definitely have been worse, but it's important to note the hallmarks of Disney that it blatantly lacks.

The plot handling is one thing. It's unsophisticated. It's a straightforward plot with no twists or trope subversion at all; anyone familiar with the genre can predict every turn of the well-trodden path.

And the thing that personally upsets me that people don't seem to even notice is the chick-flickiness of the romance. The choice of actors is obvious here. The characterization. If you took it all and made it a modern-day live-action film, it would be the kind of movie sexually-repressed white chicks would drag their boyfriends to and the rest of the world would grudgingly ignore. The same can't be said of Disney movies. They strive for a more universal appeal, even when wearing princess dresses.

Go ahead and like Anastasia, a person's own opinion is as sacred as anything should be (so, sort of but not too much). But don't mix up your facts. Anastasia is not part of the Disney canon.
    Thank fuck.

no its not. but i really not see why that offends you so much. honestly i find your anger over it to be kind of silly. :/

personally i love Anastasia. I know it is not a disney movie but a fox production, but i dont see how that makes it any less good as a disney princess movie. Just look at some of the old disney princess movies, like snow white. I dont know about you, but while i loved that movie i found it even more predictable than anastasia. Then you have the fact that all of the disney princess movies so far with the acception of black cauldron and enchanted were based off of the brothers grim tales. except that brothers grim were darker and had more substance. This doesnt mean that i dislike the disney princesses, in fact i love them. But i do face the truths.

Honestly I don't see what has gotten you so worked up over the movie. It wasn't a knock off of Disney. For one, it was based albeit very loosely, after the real Grand Duchess Anastasia. They just took the liberties to make a family appropriate movie since no on really knows what ever happened to Anastasia after her family was murdered. The plot was no more predictable than many other movies. After all, I have to agree with Duet, most disney movies involving the princesses always seemed predictable to me. It sounds more like you have a complaint with Fox or with the actors rather than the movie itself.

I've always know the difference between the Anastasia and Disney movies, though that never truly bothered me. I quite like Anastasia and found the movie refreshing. I have to agree though some people don't know that Anastasia is not a Disney film.

This is funny. As if Disney movies are the impenetrable gold standard in animated film making. Go back and watch them without the rosy veil of nostalgia over your eyes and you'll see they're not perfect. A lot of those princess stories don't make any sense.

Yeah, so Anastacia isn't a Disney movie. Now I know. But when I watched it many years ago, I didn't know. Because, yeah, Fox imitated Disney's style. I liked it back then. Of course it's predictable for a bit older people, but it's an animated movie made for kids. Hey, like other people already said, it's not any more predictable than Disney princess movies.

Oh, and Ladyduet: Disney princess movies were based not only on Brothers Grimm, but also on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales. Like The Little Mermaid.

i agree with everyone here, i dont see what your getting so worked up about.. so what if it copied disney that doesn't make it any less good. i like the film itself and the actors in it. go and read some of the stories that disney films are based on.... they could totally make some sort of dark horrorish film out of the little mermaid story(that would kick major butt)

News to me. I always assumed it was Disney. I saw it only once and that was many years ago. I think I quite liked it. Questionable whether or not I would now, but that goes for lots of things.

Questing: Nenet Hair, Gold Spell.
yeah, fox made that one. But good acting overall and i still love it even years later. But for some reason i never liked its sequels

@AcidDrop - I can totally agree, I know there have a been a couple Snow White horror movies, so I could actually see a dark/horror version of The Little Mermaid.

I know they recently did a variation of Red Riding Hood, but I was kinda 50/50 on my opinion of it.

I personally loved it, it broke my heart when I lost my VCR copy (my only one). I thought it was disney but that didn't really affect me.

As a child it didn't matter to me if it was Disney or not. It was the whole princess thing that I loved and I'm pretty sure most young girls want to watch.
The music and songs is what really sticks in my head even to this day.
