View topic - A Theory About Mental Health

That's an interesting theory and it makes logical sense. Even though it would be a minuscule amount from a single person. . you multiply it through the multitudes of people living here and on top of it all of the people who pass through Dallas on their travels. Btw, i have to ask. . why did you mention Dallas specifically?

Sorry, I'm a little
Dallas specifically because I live there.

And the theory was more meant to be one potential piece in the complicated web.

Words exist because of meaning. Once you've gotten the meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words so I can talk with him? ~Chuang Tzu

I see XD you kinda scared me anyways because I live pretty close to Dallas. I hate bottled water because it tastes so nasty to me so i live off of tap water (I also don't drink soda very much, I like it just fine but I love a glass of cold water). I have a few depression issues and other social quirks but I wouldn't say I have a true mental illness. Of course there are 'safe' amounts of lead and other harmful things in our Juice Boxes and whatnot >_< And the mess of stuff in our food. I try not to think about it much

Ignorance is bliss, but sometimes there's consequences for it.

I've been doing my hardest to eat mainly organic foods or grass fed animals when I do eat meat after finding out where most food comes from, what they do to produce it, and some of the consequences of mass producing food like we do currently. There's a ton of material out there and research being done by nutritionists that's opposed to current mass farming techniques. For instance one of the consequences that's supposed to have arisen from putting cows in lots and feeding them a corn based diet instead of allowing them to graze is the creation of e coli.

There was one scientist that claimed that niacin in large doses can reverse depression but...he didn't have the paperwork to support it so I'm kind of taking that one with a grain of salt.

I suffer from depression, i had a similar childhood experience as you.
Later on in the years i gained anxiety and paranoia, iam on meds now and its true when you miss a pill jesus christ its bad, i also feel like you said, your diet has a lot to do with how you think and feel, my diet is kinda balanced with good food and also i snack sometimes XD
Another thing the other day my father mentioned to me, he said, nowadays it seems everything is wrong there's a lot of people getting bad stuff such cancer etc, but it may not be what we think, nowadays when we have depression or something aches we speak up about it because its accepted today and we have knowledge of what these things are and what may cause it, and we also have better technology to make a diagnosis.
What he said really made me think. We'll never know how many women had breast cancer and they themselves didnt even know about it but lived a long full life, lifes mysteries.

Always Accepting Friend Requests

Let me start out by saying that the way of modern medicines revolve around the Pharmaceutical companies making money. Uncle Sam does not want to cure you. He wants to give you money making products that treat symptoms. If you are treating symptoms, you will never be rid of them until you are cured. So Uncle Sam keeps you "sick" to make sure you or your medicine provider is spending on these symptom-treatments. So many diseases are curable, but the government does not want the mainstream to know that. Modern Medicine is not about the cure, but the symptoms. Therefore, about the money. Maybe even making you sick.
Anyway, on the topic of psychological medications. I do not speak for everyone. In my own experience, I came to realize I was a guinea pig. I was on psychiatric medications from the age of 7 to the age of 17. Many of them. I have more problems than what I started with. I stopped taking these medications when I realized I had a right to refuse. The withdrawals were indeed horrible and made me emotionally unstable. But when the effects wore off, I realized how clouded and drugged I was. In time, I found I could identify my anxiety, depression, and anger and begin to heal. I am still healing. But my mind had never been clear until I stopped taking the medications. I still deal with these emotions, but when I was on these medications, I was extremely unstable, illogical, irrational, and downright psychotic. Now I am functioning in a normal society to the best of my ability. They did misdiagnose me many times over my lifetime, but you cannot diagnose someone with a chemical imbalance when the medications are causing a different imbalance. For all I know, these medications were the cause of most of my problems. I know not all of them, but perhaps most.

It could be possible, taking medication that's not meant for you has often been known to cause medical problems, or symptoms of the disease it's supposed to be treating.

Medicine is a loose term too in today's society, because we drug our people up for tons of reasons and very few of them are health related.

Donate for my birthday? its MAY 20th!
Psychoactive drugs do help people, though. Obviously, each case is different, but I was so damn depressed (as a symptom of PTSD, not a disorder in and of itself) that I was completely unable to deal with the underlying causes until I was on medication that numbed the all-encompassing dread and sadness I felt on a daily basis.

I do see and get what you are saying but when I was younger my brother had problems dangerous problems. Lets just say that he had a lot of different medical conditions and right now if he didn't have his medication he would be worse.

I'm not sure for everyone else, but this is what I see for me.

I doubt it's water intake for me. I don't drink soda's or juices or milk. I only drink water from our filter.

I'm in treatment for mental illness, and the things that cause me to be the way I am have nothing to do with water. My diet, maybe yes, because it's extremely restricted because I'm struggling with my eating disorder. I also suffer from other things that I'm not comfortable sharing.

That's my take on my personal situation anyways

I've wondered about this too

While, I do agree that diet and exercise, water intake (even vitamin D levels) can effect mental health, I don't think that "true mental illness" is rare. That's like saying cancer is rare. We all have cancer cells in our bodies, just like we all have the potential to have mental illness.

I also think that most of your OP is specifically talking about depression, anxiety. In a sense, I do agree, that oftentimes depression/anxiety disorders are mis-diagnosed, I think it's a HUGE jump to conclude that all mental health disorders are caused by exercise, diet, etc.

I've been recently diagnosed with Psychotic Depression after being in residential care in the psychiatric unit of the hospital for two weeks. I'm medicated for PTSD and psychosis (Remeron & Seroquel) and right now my diet is getting better, I am taking fish oil tablets and vitamin D tablets, and even with my Seroquel, the voices are still there.

I agree, it could be something that might be a factor in mental health... but a cause? Eh... I'm skeptical.
