Alioth - The capital of Tolem. While in the past any race could ascend the throne, for the past two hundred years it has been solely a human monarchy. Its layout is divided into several distinct "Districts", forming a series of rings around the royal palace. The Gold District encompasses the palace and its entire perimetre, encircled by high walls and one main gate. Exiting the gate and crossing the moat leads to the Marble District, where those of wealth and status live in luxurious homes on large properties.
Surrounding this is the Market District. This is the lifestream of the city, where people of all classes converge, as this is where all commerce occurs. Traveling merchants, permanent shops, inns, and services of all kinds set up store here, alongside various forms of entertainment.
Beyond is the Thatch District, home to commoners, usually those who have enough wealth to live relatively comfortable lives. However, there are parts of the Thatch District which have gone to ruin; these parts are known as the Slum Districts, and it is where most criminals, social outcasts, and beggars eke out a living in sub-standard conditions.
Mensae Mountains - Largest mountain range. Its tallest peak is Achernar, more commonly known as Heaven Spire. Its ancient glaciers and cold peaks are the source of Tolem's greatest and longest river, the Eridanus River.
Phact - Known as the Holy City, this is the city of divine and light magic and is cared for by the Ras Alhague. Mages of this class are often called Clerics and specialize in curative magics. Phact is also known as "Sanctuary", for its very foundations are infused with ancient divine magic that prevents violence. True to its name, this city is the only neutral-ground city in Tolem, and the Discipleship of Asclepius is the only group of people who can move freely across the land.
Alpheratz - The City of Magic, governed by the Shedir. The Alpheratz Academy can be found here, where all mage-hopefuls gather to learn to master their element. As expected of a city of magical arts, Alpheratz boasts one of the largest concentrations of magical energy.
Canopus, Rotanev, Formalhaut, Naos, & Regor - The five harbour towns of Tolem, whose mayors create the Kaitos Council. Canopus, Naos, and Regor specialize in ship-building, and Naos boasts the largest and finest shipyards in Tolem. Rotanev and Formalhaut are prized for their seafood; Rotanev pearls are highly prized for their size and quality.
Dorado Plains - Also known as the Sea of Gold due to the long grasses that turn a vibrant golden yellow during the summer and autumn months, the Plains are home to nomadic tribes of shapeshifters who call themselves the Orio. The Orio live by the tribe leader's name; for example, if the leader's name is Herne, then all of the tribe's members live with the name "ap Herne" attached to the back of their actual names. They keep to themselves and are generally considered neutral in the wars, but some do have alliances with races and kingdoms. While a large concentration of the Orio live in the plains, they can be found scattered throughout Tolem in small cluster tribes here and there, usually in forest or otherwise untamed areas.
Etamin - Nestled near the foot of Archenar is Etamin, the City of Dragons. Known for their incredibly long lifespans, tri-biological existences, and mighty power, Dragons are one of the wisest - but also one of the proudest - races in Tolem. Etamin boasts the largest library and catacomb archives in the land, meticulously kept in pristine condition by the elders, and is also the city closest to Thuban, the sacred hatching grounds of Dragons deep within the mountains. For this reason Dragon territory spans a large part of the eastern peaks of the Mensae mountain range and its surroundings areas.
Rigel Company - "For our King we live, for our King we die."
Leader title: Kentaurus
Led by the mighty Kentaurus, the Rigel Company is comprised of mostly men; a few women find their way into the ranks from time to time, but most ladies tend to seek out the Cygnus Riders rather than hang around a bunch of testosterone lumps. They are the classic order of knights, beginning their training at the age of ten as pages and working their way up. While the castle accepts all human males as pages, only the cream of the crop make it into the Company. Others tend to return to their homes to act as protectors of their lands there, while still retaining the honours of knighthood.
Cygnus Riders - "Who said women can't be knights too?"
Leader title: Vega
A female-only counterpart to the Rigel Company, the Cygnus Riders are by no means weaker than the male knights. If anything, they are more versatile, though all members are expected to ride horses. The one difference is that they specialize in horseback archery; they are said to match even Elves in terms of accuracy and agility with a bow even when mounted on moving horses. The Riders travel much lighter because of their outstanding talent, and are swifter than the Company, making them ideal blitzkrieg units. Though it used to be open to any race, since the wars began, it has exclusively accepted humans.
Discipleship of Asclepius - "Our divine gifts were given to us that we may heal the wounded and save the lost..."
Leader title: Ras Alhague
Mages who hold an affinity for light-element magic tend to seek Phact as the place to call home. The Discipleship accepts all regardless of race or gender, and is the only healing-class organization that is recognized in every kingdom. Like the city from which they hail, the Discipleship is a neutral force in the constant wars, and will tend to the wounded of any and all. In return, they are protected across the land and are given free access to any kingdom. Harming a cleric of the Discipleship is considered one of the worst crimes throughout Tolem and all kingdoms will deal out the harshest punishments for those who are convicted of this heinous act.
Altair Templars - "As the Divine One is our shield and strength, so too must we be the shield and strength of those who are needy."
Leader title: Phoenix Paladin
Pages seeking a more altruistic approach of protecting Tolem may travel to Phact in hopes of having one of the paladins of the Altair Templars take them under their wing as a squire. On top of learning swordsmanship and the way of knighthood, they are trained in the divine arts of light magic. Many of their weapons and shields are forged of holy silver and imbued with divine magic. Though more or less a neutral party like their Discipleship counterparts, they are more restricted in their comings and goings. More often than not, they act as peacekeepers, escorts of the Discipleship, or hired hands to protect villages along with the royal companies. Many a paladin dreams of earning the title of Lionheart, a title given only to the greatest of champions.
Alpheratz Academy - "The world holds a great number of mysteries, but none so great as the workings of anima..."
Leader title: Shedir
The Academy is home to mages specializing in anima magic. Split into four "houses", each headed by the Shedir of the corresponding element, the students spend much of their time within the Academy surrounded by mage hopefuls of the same element. The extremely rare case in which a new mage shows affinity for more than one element is cared for by the Druid Sage, leader of the Shedir, to be groomed into a successor for the title.
The Gienah Fraternity - "If the price is right, no task is too hard."
Leader title: Men Alphard
Though not recognized as an official group, there is no denying that the Fraternity is a force to be reckoned with, even for the armies of kingdoms. This assassination ring sits at the head of all the rings scattered and hidden throughout Tolem. The seat of leadership is awash with blood; only the deadliest of assassins claims the title of Men Alphard and survive the many attempts at his life. Those directly under his command are often appointed for skill or out of an alliance, and oversee the various rings that create the vast network of the Fraternity. So discreet are they that no one knows where their true headquarters are stationed, and all commissions requested of the Fraternity are always paid in full - whether by gold, or by blood. While it used to solely consist of men, anyone are invited into the ranks provided they show the right amount of skill.
Humans
Key cities: Alioth, Phact, Alpheratz, Canopus, Naos, Rotanev, Formalhaut, Regor
Highly adaptable and insatiably curious, Humans make up a large percentage of Tolem's population, and are as equally scattered throughout the land. While they only have a meagre 75-year average lifespan and are easily outlived by many other races, they boast a highly adaptable, if not rather weak, body and a relatively high reproductive rate. Many of Tolem's technologies can find their roots in Humans, and many races have now adapted and modified them to suit their own needs. Humans are incredibly versatile in their abilities, being mediocre in comparison to other races but otherwise quite well-rounded. Thus, given some time, they can adjust to any lifestyle and career they wish.
Shapeshifters
Key cities: None; records tell of their origin from Dorado Plains
The nomadic Orio of the Dorado Plains are almost invariably Shapeshifters, humanoid beings with the ability to transform into any animal at will. While their lifespans are on par with humans, their fives senses are equal to a beast's. Shapeshifters excel in stealth and hunting, and hold a strong sense of loyalty to their tribe. Their ascension into adulthood comes in stages, marked by the intricate tattoos that cover their body, unique to each tribe. A Shapeshifter child first receives his or her tattoos at the age of five; more tattoos are added as they reach a certain age, or accomplish a certain milestone. At the age of ten, each child is subjected to the divinations of the tribe Seer, whose visions will indicate the role of the child within the tribe for the rest of their life. At the age of sixteen, they are given the mark of adulthood and a large celebration is held for all the new adults within the tribe.
Dragons
Key cities: Etamin, Ladon, Rastaban, Dhiba, Juza, Tyl, Thuban
Dragons have an average 700-year lifespan, though it's not surprising to have a Dragon, especially the leaders, live up to about 1000. They naturally have three forms: human, humanoid, and beast. A Dragon's human form is indistinguishable from humans, apart from the fact that they are more adept in using elemental magic than an Elf. They are also immune to the negative effects of their element; for example, fire Dragons are also immune to fire, while water Dragons can't drown (this goes for all three forms). In human form, their Dragon abilities are sorely limited, though they tend to be stronger than the average human.
Their humanoid form looks mostly human, though there are reptilian and dragon-esque features on them, such as scales, a tail, claws, wings, horns, and slitted eyes. You can use whichever combination of these you desire, granted that the feature is present within their beast form. So if the beast form does not have horns, it makes no sense for the humanoid form to suddenly sprout them. Their humanoid form is more for battle, since it means that they can access more of their Dragon strength and power. The beast form, then, is their fully animal form. Like humans, they are unique in appearances and the like; you may choose to have them as an Oriental dragon, or a European dragon, or whatever mix of the two you like. A large majority of Dragons dislike transforming into their beast form.
Socially, Dragons are a relatively peaceful, scholarly race. Due to their immense lifespans, they gather a lot of wisdom and knowledge over the years, and are more than willing to share in their collective intellect. The drawback is that most older Dragons tend to be a little arrogant when dealing with other races, since they view themselves as smarter than them.
Dragons are born from eggs; this is the only time a Dragon will take on their beast form willingly, though even then the mothers travel to the hatching grounds deep within the mountains. Incubation is about 4 months, after which the hatchlings, in their beast forms, emerge from their eggs. The mothers will stay with their hatchling in the grounds until the baby is about a year old, in which it will naturally take on a humanoid form.
At that point, they return to one of the Dragon cities to live. The infant Dragon will remain in its humanoid form up to about 20 years, in which it fully gains its human form, which will look about the age of a human toddler or young child. At this point the Dragon tot will be put through education, which will last until they are about 40. It is not uncommon for a Dragon to leave home to explore the rest of Tolem. Dragons reach their "prime age", which is about 20-27-ish for humans, at about 100. From there their aging process basically grinds to a halt; they'll stay looking like young-ish adults for the next few hundred years, resuming a slow aging process at 600.
